The Government of Canada has announced a new initiative to plant 1.2 million trees in 300 communities by 2031.

The Growing Canada’s Community Canopies (GCCC) project, part of the federal 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program, aims to enhance urban green spaces and create over 2,000 jobs annually. Supported by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and its Green Municipal Fund, the program focuses on planting diverse, native species to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and increase resilience to climate change.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson emphasized the environmental and health benefits of urban forestry at the announcement on May 15 in North Vancouver, where he also highlighted that of the over 550 million trees planted through the 2BT program so far, more than 3,000 have been planted in North Vancouver through existing partnerships — five times the number originally anticipated for the municipality.

Applications for the first round of GCCC funding are open until July 12, 2024.
